Youth raises to shape the future of Kapayan – Jannie Lasimbang

PENAMPANG : – It is important to equip youths with the skills, knowledge, and values necessary to navigate and shape their own futures.

Based on these principles, Kepayan lawmaker Datuk Jannie Lasimbang led a programme aimed at encouraging the youths to be interested and wanting to be actively involved in elections.

The programme on Aug 2 was held in Tuundongon Homestay, Kampung Tunoh, successfully brought together young people aged 18–25.

The youths bravely stepped forward to learn, engage in meaningful discussions and immerse themselves in the world of democracy and community culture.

“Seeing the incredible energy and enthusiasm of the youth in Kapayan truly filled me with joy,” Jannie said.

Throughout the day, participants not only took part in a mock election and debates, but also experienced hands-on cultural activities.

They also participated in coconut bowling, slingshot competitions, Hinava making and performances of traditional Sumazau and Magagung.

“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Sdr Adrian Lasimbang, former Senator for sharing his insights on how our democratic system works from his own lived experience,” Jannie said.

She also expressed thanks to Chin Guan Rong from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) who made political systems and democracy feel accessible and relevant to our younger generation.

“What made me proudest? Witnessing the youth speak up, debate confidently, and collaborate as a team.”

She said they had shown that young people are not merely observers but ready to lead.

“I would also like to thank our gracious hosts for allowing us to use the venu and to Kampung Tunoh Village Chief, KK Patric Justine for joining us and showing his support.”

“A special thanks goes to my intern from Canada who courageously took on the challenge of co-organising this programme with my team and to all the dedicated volunteers and facilitators who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.”

Jannie added that what she witnessed was more than just participation, it was ownership.

“Our youth took charge of the moment, of their learning, and of their voice.”

“If this is the spirit that continues to grow I know Sabah is in good hands,” Jannie said

She pointed out that youths are not just the hope, they are the future.
