Anwar announcing PKR candidates for GE 17
Incumbent Api Api lawmaker Christina Liew, the former Sabah PKR chief, was dropped from the lineup.
KOTA KINABALU : – Sabah PKR tonight revealed that it will be contesting 10 seats in the state election when it unveiled its lineup, which includes the son of Sabah governor Musa Aman.
The party, which won two seats in the last state polls, has also dropped Christina Liew, the former Sabah PKR chief, from the lineup.
Yamani Hafez Musa, whose membership was subject to much speculation, will contest in Sindumin, which was held by Warisan previously.
PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announed the party’s candidates at the Sabah International Convention Centre in Kota Kinabalu Last night.
Yamani, who is Musa’s eldest son, is a former deputy finance minister II.
He won the Sipitang parliamentary seat on a Barisan Nasional ticket in the 2018 general election. He later joined Bersatu and did not defend the seat in the 2022 elections.
Liew’s omission from the lineup effectively ends speculation earlier this year that she would be dropped.
She won the Api-Api seat in a nine-cornered fight in the state election in 2020.
In addition to Api-Api, PKR won Inanam, through Peto Galim.
In announcing the PKR candidates at the Sabah International Convention Centre in Kota Kinabalu tonight, party president Anwar Ibrahim said Pakatan Harapan, which PKR is a part of, will be contesting 23 seats in the state election.
“Even though we have a solid alliance with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Barisan Nasional, we want to ensure that we have (our) representatives (in the state government) so that ties between the federal and state governments remain stable,” Anwar, who is also the PH chairman, said.
PH has reached separate pacts with GRS and BN.
GRS and PH are allies in the Hajiji Noor state government, while BN sits in the opposition in the Sabah legislative assembly.
Separately, Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud said its goal to win the seats was a “huge mission”.
“It will be the first time that PKR is participating in the polls in Sabah as the government,” he said.
