THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF BORNEO (NUB) is presently in the conceptual planning stage and is still on a virtual page here on Facebook.
We aim to establish a university specially for Borneo to cater to all Bornean’s needs.
Historically, setting up this university stemmed from having a KadazanDusun training platform. When founded on 27 July 2017, this group was known as The Kadazandusun Academy of Social Sciences. Its main objectives were:
• To preserve and promote the Kadazandusun dialects in Sabah.
• To strengthen the economic base of the indigenous peoples (especially the Kadazandusun in Sabah) by educating them on the sustainable use of their resources.
• To help the children of the Kadazandusun get a good education.
• To document the traditions, cultures and customary rights of the Kadazandusun;
• To connect the Kadazandusun with other indigenous groups worldwide to pursue a common agenda.
After it became clear that the Kadazandusun is not the only indigenous group in Borneo, the organisation was renamed the Borneo Academy of Social Sciences on 4 November 2021.
The core objectives remain the same, but it now encompasses the entire indigenous peoples of Borneo who live in Sabah, Labuan, Sarawak, Brunei, Kalimantan Utara, Kalimantan Tengah, Kalimantan Barat, Kalimantan Selatan, and Kalimantan Timur.
The name “Academy of Social Sciences” epitomises the vision and mission of the group, which is to provide an educational platform for Bornean, especially the indigenous peoples themselves, to discuss and research everything about Borneo in the hope that it will one day achieve the status of a university.
This year, the Academy celebrates its 7th anniversary.
After humble beginnings, it now has 7,000 members from the different areas of Borneo.
To celebrate this, the name “Borneo Academy of Social Sciences” has been changed to “University of Borneo (UoB).”
Again, on 10 March 2024, the name was changed to “NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF BORNEO” to truly reflect the aspirations of the Bornean people.
The idea has evolved. So is the vision.
Of course, we have yet to receive an official registration certificate from any authority.
However, we are working on a proposal to be presented to the relevant parties in Sabah, Labuan, Sarawak, Brunei, and North Kalimantan to get their support.
Hopefully, this idea will become a reality as an adequately established institution for Borneo. Once officially installed, we will introduce some courses in various levels of study – certificates, bachelor’s, master’s, and even doctoral degrees in the future.
This FB Page has evolved from “Kadazandusun Academy of Social Sciences” to “Borneo Academy of Social Sciences” and now to the “University of Borneo.”
We count on every Bornean to help us realise our mission and vision.
Hopefully, some philanthropists worldwide will extend their helping hands to us.
