Clemency for Najib amid legal integrity debate

Datuk James Ligunjang J.P

KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah Justice of Peace says there is public concern regarding the integrity of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s conviction in the SRC case.

Datuk James Ligunjang said it was crucial to recognise that Najib Razak’s defense was thoroughly explored through the highest levels of the country’s judicial system.

“Assertions casting doubt on the legitimacy of his conviction are to me is without merit, ” he said.

However, Ligunjang emphasises the importance of acknowledging that Najib Razak’s defense was thoroughly examined by the highest levels of the country’s judicial system.

In a recent social media post, the former assemblyman for Petagas dismissed any doubts about the legitimacy of Najib’s conviction, stating that he was found guilty by the Apex Court and sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment and a fine of RM210 million.

According to Ligunjang, the decision now lies with the Pardons Board to determine the outcome of Najib’s petition for clemency.

During their deliberation, he said the Board must carefully consider the gravity of his offences in relation to his past contributions as Prime Minister.

Ligunjang argues that a complete exoneration could undermine the credibility of the nation’s legal system and lead to public skepticism.

Therefore, he suggests that the Pardons Board may find it more appropriate to commute Najib’s sentence instead.

Yesterday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that the Cabinet was informed about Najib Razak’s application for a royal pardon.

However, he declined to disclose any further details regarding the information presented to the government. – Talantang
