Premier apts for Sabah Chief Minister – Ligunjang

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk James Ligunjang says the proposal to elevate the position of Chief Minister of Sabah to Premier, similar to Sarawak is most appropriate.

The former assemblyman for Petagas pointed out that it is not only relevant but also holds symbolic significance in highlighting the unique partnership between these two states and their integral role in the formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963.

“The leaders of Sabah and Sarawak should have equivalent status and authority akin to that of Deputy Prime Ministers of Malaysia,” Ligunjang said in a statement Sunday.

Ligunjang, who is also a Justice of Peace, said this parity is crucial in upholding the principles of a federation.

It is essential to recognise that Sabah and Sarawak should not be simply viewed as equals to the 11 states in Malaya that constitute the Federation of Malaya, but as equal partners alongside Malaya in the formation of Malaysia.

To further elaborate, the elevation of the Chief Minister to Premier in both states would underscore their distinctiveness and significance within the Federation Malaysia.

This move would solidify the idea of a balanced partnership among all states, emphasising the unique historical and political context of Sabah and Sarawak’s inclusion in the Federation of Malaysia.

“This proposal is not only about granting a title change, but about affirming the equal standing and importance of Sabah and Sarawak within the Federation of Malaysia,” Ligunjang added.
