SEMPORNA : Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil expressed optimism about the potential of Free-Space Optical Communication (FSO) technology deployed by Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) to provide high-speed internet coverage to residents.

Fahmi noted that the success of FSO technology on Pulau Bum Bum could be replicated in other parts of Malaysia, especially in areas where building traditional telecommunication towers is challenging.

The minister highlighted that approximately three percent of populated areas in Malaysia still lack internet access, affecting around 2,800 communities.

According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), only 15 percent of these communities are suitable for internet access through conventional telecommunication towers, indicating the need for alternative solutions like FSO technology.

TM One’s executive vice president, Shazurawati Abd Karim, explained that FSO technology utilizes light transmitted through free space for telecommunications purposes, enabling high-speed gigabit broadband internet similar to urban areas. Pulau Bum Bum is one of four locations, including Pulau Aman in Penang, and Maludam and Beladin in Sarawak, where FSO technology has been successfully implemented since 2022.

Moreover, Fahmi highlighted the importance of National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) in expanding internet access. He mentioned that 186 NADI centers are being developed nationwide to provide high-speed internet access to more people, with plans for further expansion to meet increasing demand.

Additionally, Fahmi emphasized the economic potential of Pulau Bum Bum, mentioning the Sejahtera Komuniti MADANI (SejaTi MADANI) Programme that provides funding opportunities for village chiefs to stimulate economic activities at the community level. He encouraged communities to identify products for development and apply for funding to enhance local economies.

Looking ahead, Fahmi underscored the need to equip Pulau Bum Bum with upgraded facilities, including improved internet access, by 2026 in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year. He highlighted the island’s potential to attract more tourists through its natural beauty, culinary offerings, and enhanced connectivity.

The government’s focus on leveraging innovative technologies like FSO, expanding internet access through NADI centers, and supporting local economic development reflects a commitment to bridging the digital divide and promoting sustainable growth across Malaysia.
