Crocodile in Likas Bay Park

KOTA KINABALU : This  city, appreciated by many visiting foreigners for its well managed greenery spots witnessed a peculiar discovery that left residents astonished.

A second 3-meter-long crocodile was captured in a public park Friday, adding to the intrigue following the recent capture of another reptile Wednesday.

The unusual incident unfolded at the Likas Bay Public Park, where passers-by spotted the crocodile lurking in a drain late at night.

Swift action was taken as authorities were promptly alerted, leading to a joint effort by the Kota Kinabalu Civil Defence Force and the Fire and Rescue Department to secure the creature.

Capturing the 180kg crocodile proved to be a challenging task, but after a diligent operation that lasted about half an hour, the reptile was successfully retrieved and transferred to the APM office.

This unexpected encounter marked the second crocodile capture within a short span, with the first one being apprehended by islanders in Pulau Gaya after a harrowing attempt to attack a child.

The presence of these formidable creatures in urban areas has raised concerns among locals, especially considering the crocodile’s prolonged presence in the waters near the city.

Videos of crocodile sightings in Likas Bay have circulated online, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance and wildlife management measures in the region.

As the community grapples with the unexpected appearance of these predators in urban settings, the recent captures serve as a stark reminder of the coexistence between humans and wildlife, prompting authorities to take proactive steps to ensure public safety and wildlife conservation in Kota Kinabalu
