All indigenous communities in Sabah are equal : Wences Angang

By Nikko Fabian
PENAMPANG: Momogun National Congress (MNC) president Tan Sri Wences Angang emphasized that no indigenous community in Sabah holds superiority over another.

Addressing over 60 representatives of ethnic associations at a pre-convention event in Penampang, Wences underscored the importance of solidarity and support among all indigenous groups under the inclusive term of Momogun.

Drawing a contrast with the concept of ‘ketuanan Melayu’ (Malay superiority) in Malaya, he also highlighted that in Sabah, all ethnic communities under the Momogun umbrella are regarded as equals, emphasizing a shared identity and unity among the diverse indigenous peoples of the region.

The pre-convention event served as a platform for consultation on the adoption of Momogun as the generic term for indigenous ethnic groups in Sabah, paving the way for the upcoming main convention scheduled for August 1.

With Sabah being home to approximately 36 ethnic communities and over 200 sub-ethnic groups, the quest for a unifying term like Momogun aims to foster cohesion and solidarity among the diverse indigenous populations.

Wences stressed the significance of unity under a common identity, noting that the collective strength of Sabah’s indigenous peoples lies in their ability to stand together with a unified voice on matters of importance.

He emphasized the need for indigenous communities to unite under the banner of Momogun, transcending divisions and embracing a shared sense of identity and purpose.

Describing the pre-convention event as a success, wences expressed satisfaction with the representatives’ understanding of the rationale behind adopting a generic term for indigenous groups.

He highlighted the importance of unity, emphasizing that the sizable population of indigenous peoples in Sabah holds significant influence and can amplify their collective voice on issues that affect their interests.

As Sabah’s indigenous communities navigate the complexities of a diverse cultural landscape, the call for unity and equality resonates as a beacon of strength and solidarity.

The Momogun National Congress’s advocacy for equality among all local communities reflects a commitment to fostering inclusivity, cohesion, and a shared sense of identity among Sabah’s indigenous peoples.
