SCC Holds Meeting to address Economic Trends and Activities In Sandakan

SANDAKAN: – The Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce convened a pivotal meeting with Datuk Poon Ming Fung @ Frankie, ADUN N.56 Tanjong Papat cum Chairman of DAP Sabah to delve into the current economic landscape and ongoing activities within Sandakan.

Held at the N.56 Tanjong Papat Service Centre, Taman Grandview on 28th June, the session aimed to foster a deeper understanding of economic trends impacting local businesses and the broader community.

Chia Hock Ak, Chairman of the Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce, opened the meeting with a warm welcome, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in navigating the challenges and opportunities facing Sandakan’s business sector.

The agenda featured a comprehensive review of recent economic indicators, highlighting key insights into market trends, youth development, and business sentiment across various sectors, especially tourism.

Participants engaged in robust discussions, identifying growth areas and potential obstacles affecting local enterprises.

During the session, committee members highlighted several key observations and proposals to address tourism-related challenges.

Notably, concerns were raised regarding the lack of 4-star hotels in Sandakan, underscoring the need for increased investment in hospitality infrastructure to accommodate growing tourist demand.

“This initiative will not only attract higher-spending tourists but also contribute to the local economy,” emphasized Frankie Poon.

Furthermore, committee members proposed initiatives to enhance existing tourism spots such as Batu Sapi Park, Berhala Island, and Dandulit Black Sand Beach.

These locations, rich in history and natural beauty, were identified as prime candidates for development into prominent tourist attractions.

They believe that by promoting the historical significance and natural allure of Batu Sapi Park, Berhala Island, and Dandulit Black Sand Beach, which can significantly boost visitor interest and prolong tourist stays in Sandakan.

Additionally, the Chamber expressed strong support for Sandakan’s inclusion as a prominent representative of Sabah Tourism Board initiatives. This strategic partnership would leverage the board’s expertise and resources to accelerate tourism development efforts in Sandakan, ultimately positioning the city as a premier destination within Sabah.

During the session, committee members expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of infrastructure across Sandakan town.

Issues ranging from roads and drainage systems to public parks and public facilities were highlighted as requiring immediate attention.

“I agree and t is imperative that we allocate sufficient maintenance funds to revitalize our town’s infrastructure,” stated Frankie Poon.

“By prioritizing these investments, we can enhance public safety, improve quality of life, and attract further economic opportunities to Sandakan.” “Investing in infrastructure revitalization not only addresses current deficiencies but also lays the foundation for future growth and prosperity.”

Frankie Poon urged proactive measures to invigorate and strengthen the local tourism industry.

This initiative aims to foster collaboration and strategic planning to capitalize on Sandakan’s tourism potential.

Therefore, need for the Tourism Committee to convene regularly and actively engage stakeholders. Discussions centered on leveraging Sandakan’s unique attractions and historical significance to attract tourists and stimulate economic growth.

Besides that, Frankie Poon highlighted again the importance of leveraging existing resources to empower the youth of Sandakan.

Discussions centered on maximizing the potential of Menara MPS and other council-owned properties to allocate spaces for youth-led ..enterprises. “Empowering our youth is crucial for the sustainable development of Sandakan,” stated Frankie Poon.

“By providing access to facilities like Menara MPS, we can create a supportive environment where young entrepreneurs can thrive and contribute to the local economy.”

In closing, Frankie Poon expressed gratitude to all attendees for their active participation and commitment to driving positive change within Sandakan’s economic landscape.

“Together, we are poised to overcome challenges and seize opportunities that lie ahead,” he said.
