Sabahans Celebrate Malaysia’s Independence Day in New Zealand

HAMILTON,  New Zealand : – Sabahans in New Zealand marked Malaysia’s 67th Independence Day with a vibrant celebration at the Tamahere Community Centre, here Saturday (Aug 31).

The event, held from 11 am to 3 pm, was organised by an informal committee with support from the Sabah Auckland New Zealand Association Incorporated (SAANZI), a group dedicated to strengthening cultural ties among Malaysians in New Zealand.

The festivities began with the arrival of distinguished guests, including the Mayor of Hamilton, a representative from the Malaysian Consulate, and the Deputy Director of Tourism Malaysia.

They were warmly greeted with a traditional kompang performance and the ceremonial bunga manggar.

The programme featured the national anthems of Malaysia and New Zealand, setting a patriotic tone for the event.

Ms. Devy Delcia, President of SAANZI, highlighted the event’s objective:

“Our participation is aimed at fostering goodwill and unity among Malaysians in New Zealand while promoting our traditional dance and costumes.”

The day’s programme included a range of cultural performances, featuring Malay, Chinese, and Indian dances, as well as traditional dances from Sabah and Sarawak.

The traditional sumazau dance from Sabah, presented by SAANZI, received significant acclaim.

The event also showcased Silat, a Thai dance, a Muay Thai performance, and a poetic recital, each contributing unique elements to the celebration.

Additional activities included the Merdeka Children’s Fashion Show, a colouring contest, and general knowledge table games, providing entertainment for all ages

The food, catered and sponsored by the Malaysian community, included a variety of dishes such as satay, nasi lemak, and mee rojak, creating a warm and homely atmosphere.

The celebration concluded with a prize-giving ceremony and a lively joget lambak dance, bringing a festive end to the day’s events
