Harnessing Sabah’s Mineral Wealth: Lessons from China

By Datuk James Ligunjang

SABAH’s abundant mineral resources present a unique opportunity to drive economic growth and elevate the standard of living for its citizens.

By establishing a state-owned mining enterprise inspired by China’s successful model, Sabah can unlock substantial economic potential while ensuring that the benefits are distributed equitably.

A state-owned enterprise would generate significant employment opportunities, retain profits within the state, and reinvest in essential infrastructure and social programs.

This approach mirrors China’s method of maintaining control over natural resources to support national development goals.

Unlike private companies, a state-managed entity would be mandated to prioritize environmental protection and uphold the rights of indigenous communities.

Ensuring that mining operations are conducted in harmony with Sabah’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Sabah cannot afford another instance of environmental degradation and pollution like the Mamut Copper Mine in Ranau.

Strategic partnerships with international firms could provide access to advanced technologies while allowing Sabah to maintain control over its resources and profits.

This strategy, akin to China’s balance of global engagement and national interests, could enhance local capabilities and economic resilience.

By adopting these strategies, Sabah can transform its natural resources into a sustainable engine for growth, securing a prosperous future for its residents.

This initiative could position Sabah as a leading example for other resource-rich regions aiming for comprehensive and inclusive development.

SABAH MAJU JAYA.
