PUTATAN, Kota Kinabalu : – A mother was killed and her 11-year-old son seriously injured after they were struck by a train at a railway crossing near Kampung Petagas this afternoon.
The incident occurred at 1.58pm when both were crossing the railway tracks.
The train, which was en route from Beaufort to Kota Kinabalu, hit the two, resulting in fatal injuries to the 41-year-old woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Putatan Fire and Rescue Station Chief Linda Eslaowagis said the boy, who was in school uniform, sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“Our team assisted in retrieving the deceased’s remains and handed them over to the police for further action,” she said.
Authorities reminded the public that railway tracks are strictly off-limits to pedestrians, emphasising the serious safety risks involved.
The operation involved additional support from the police and the Ministry of Health (KKM).
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
