Ex-Deputy Speaker urges respect for Sabah institutions amid TYT birthday celebrations

Mositun…the TYT’s role is one of dignity and unity, representing the constitutional monarchy that binds our diverse society.”

KOTA KINABALU : – Former Deputy Speaker of the Sabah Legislative Assembly, Datuk Johnny Mositun, has called for unity and respect in response to criticism surrounding the recent Tuan Yang Terutama (TYT) Governor of Sabah’s birthday celebrations.

He expressed disappointment over what he described as unnecessary negativity from certain quarters, urging critics to refrain from undermining an occasion meant to honor Sabah’s highest office.

“The TYT’s role is one of dignity and unity, representing the constitutional monarchy that binds our diverse society.”

“While healthy debate is part of democracy, constant naysaying over a ceremonial event meant to foster state pride only serves to divide rather than unite, ” Mositun said in a statement today.

He emphasized the importance of upholding Sabah’s traditions with reverence, especially during official celebrations that reflect the state’s cultural and institutional heritage.

Mositun urged that while constructive criticism is welcome, it should not overshadow the respect owed to the Governor’s office, which serves as a symbol of Sabah’s unity.

Let us rise above petty politics. This is a time for Sabahans to stand together in celebrating our shared identity, not to engage in divisive rhetoric, he added.

His remarks come amid ongoing social media debates over the scale and significance of the TYT’s birthday festivities, with some questioning the necessity of such events.

However, Mositun maintained that public ceremonies honoring state institutions play a vital role in preserving Sabah’s unity and historical continuity.

Political observers note that his statement reflects growing concerns over the erosion of respect for traditional institutions.

As a veteran leader, Mositun has long advocated for bipartisan cooperation in Sabah’s governance, emphasizing that respect for state institutions is crucial for long-term political stability and unity.
