Prospects of a Coalition Government in Sabah Between Warisan and UMNO/BN

James Ligunjang… It is unlikely a single party to secure outright victory to form a State Government.

KOTA KINABALU : – Datuk James Ligunjang believes that it is unlikely that a single party will secure an outright victory in the upcoming state election.

The former Petagas assemblyman
said now Sabah’s political landscape has become increasingly polarized.

He opined that consequently, governance will probably depend on coalitions formed by multiple parties.

James, who is a Justice of Peace, visualised the prospect of a Coalition Government between Warisan and UMNO/BN after the State elections.

He said the current GRS state government, comprising eight local parties alongside PH, maintains a strong position to win the election.

Conversely, Warisan’s chances of securing a simple majority seem limited based on previous election results and recent performance.

“Therefore, Warisan will likely need to forge alliances with other parties to attain a governing majority,” he added

Considering Warisan’s prior collaboration with UMNO during the Langkah Kinabalu incident, a coalition between Warisan and UMNO/BN to form the next government is a highly plausible scenario.

Will such a coalition be accepted by Sabahans?.

The 2025 Sabah state election, formally the 17th Sabah general election, will elect the 17th Sabah State Legislative Assembly.

It must be held by 6 December 2025 at the latest, persuant to clause 21(4) of the Constitution of Sabah.

This date is dependent on when the 16th Legislative Assembly first sat, which is October 9 2020, and so the latest date on which the election could be held is December 8 2025 (exactly 60 days after when the Assembly would be automatically dissolved).

All 73 seats will be up for contests, presuming no constituencies are added or removed in a redistribution.
