Salleh calls on the Muslims to embrace moderation during Ramadan

LAHAD DATU : – Former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak has called on the people, particularly within the Muslim community, to embrace moderation throughout the holy month of Ramadan.

He highlighted two essential principles that will influence our future: the concept of moderation in Islam and the significance of unity that transcends racial divides.

Salleh emphasised that Islam embodies the principles of wasatiyyah—moderation, balance, and justice.

“Embracing moderation in Islam does not entail compromising our beliefs; rather, it involves practising our faith in a manner that promotes peace, justice, and harmony,” he said.

Salleh made these remarks during the Iftar event organised by the Lahad Datu UMNO and other Muslim NGOs, here today.

He urged the people to join hands to become agents of unity and avoid misunderstandings or extremism.

“Whether in religious practice, governance, or daily life, moderation ensures that we remain united and strong,” he added.

Salleh also stressed the need for the people to unite beyond racial differences.

“Lahad Datu is a perfect example of how different communities—Malays, Bajaus, Suluks, Chinese, Kadazan-Dusun, and others—have lived together for generations.

“Our diversity is a blessing, not a weakness. Islam itself recognises diversity as part of God’s creation,” he said.

Later, Salleh, who is also the Sabah UMNO treasurer, handed over assistance to the poor and needy Asnafs.

Also present were Sharif Musa Mabul UMNO Lahad Datu Head with Datu Mazlan Datu Ibrahim USIA Lahad Datu Head, Samasuddin Yusop UMNO Kalabakan Head, Abdul Manan Indanan UMNO Semporna Head, Hjh Musliati Muslimin UMNO Kota Kinabalu Head, local community leaders.
