Sabah’s Bold Stand to Reassert and Reclaim Its Independence and Equity

By Datuk James Ligunjang J.P
Ex Petagas Assemblyman

IN light of Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s recent remarks regarding the ‘Sabah for Sabahans’ sentiment, I wholeheartedly support Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan and his unwavering advocacy for the rightful position of Sabah and its people.

His statement resonates deeply with our aspirations for autonomy and dignity as equal partners in the Malaysian federation.

We must acknowledge the historical context driving the call for ‘Sabah for Sabahans.’

The people of Sabah have long faced marginalization, with the federal government repeatedly failing to honor the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report.

It is time to rectify this historical injustice and reclaim our agency.

Dr. Kitingan’s grievances clearly illuminate the systemic neglect and exploitation endured by our state.

From the management of our natural resources to the erosion of our political voice, it is evident that Sabah’s wealth has been siphoned off to enrich others while our development continues to lag.

These pressing issues cannot be glossed over or dismissed by federal leaders who fail to comprehend the depth of our struggles and aspirations.

It is important that UMNO recognizes it can no longer adopt an imposing stance over Sabah.

The days of imposing decisions from a distance, without consultation or consent from the local populace, are over.

We will not tolerate an attitude of supremacy; Sabah deserves respect, recognition, and a genuine partnership that upholds our rights.

The movement for ‘Sabah for Sabahans’ is not merely a political slogan; it is a declaration of our right to self-determination.

By asserting this stance, we advocate for a future where decisions that affect our lives are made in Sabah, by the people of Sabah.

The federal government must heed our resolve, as true unity and collaboration can only flourish on the foundation of mutual respect and understanding.

As we navigate this critical moment, we call for a collective commitment to uphold the spirit of MA63 and to ensure that Sabah receives its rightful share of resources, opportunities, and political representation.

We stand in solidarity with Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan, GRS, and all Sabahans in this fight for fairness and equity.

The journey towards a prosperous and dignified future for Sabah begins now, with a clear message: Sabah is not a subordinate state, and together we will shape our destiny.

*Sabahans can no longer act like a candle that burns itself to provide light for others.*

*Together We Stand for Sabah!*
*Rumah kita, kita jaga.*
