Sabah Political Stability Under Threat: External and Internal Conspiracies Aimed at Undermining Autonomy and Progress

By Datuk James Ligunjang J.P
Former State Assemblyman

The political landscape in Sabah currently faces orchestrated efforts by certain factions opposed to the state’s independence and self-governance.

As highlighted by Datuk Phillip Golingai in his article in *The Star* titled *”The Sabah Scandal – Is it about minerals or power?”*, these strategies appear carefully crafted to destabilize and discredit the current leadership, thus hindering Sabah’s pursuit of greater autonomy and development.

A central focus of these efforts is the deliberate spread of manipulated scandals and controversies—including doctored videos and false corruption allegations—targeting key politicians within the coalition government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

These tactics aim to influence public perception, fracture alliances—particularly within Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)—and weaken local governance structures.

The underlying goal seems to be the installation of a “Putrajaya-friendly” chief minister—one who may prioritize federal interests over Sabah’s rights—potentially at the expense of vital issues such as the Malaysia Agreement 1963, which underpins the state’s autonomy.

These orchestrated maneuvers, involving allegations of blackmail, covert financing, and misinformation, threaten to undermine Sabah’s democratic integrity.

Beyond mere political rivalry, these tactics reveal a reckless pursuit of influence that risks destabilizing the state—serving personal or political gains rather than genuine governance.

Despite these challenges, the resilience and unity of Sabah’s diverse coalition parties within GRS remain crucial.

Their collective commitment to stability, inclusiveness, and sustainable development serve as a strong defense against divisive schemes.

Protecting Sabah’s resources and rights from both external and internal manipulations is essential to safeguarding the state’s sovereignty and future.

It is vital for Sabah’s political landscape to remain focused on constructive governance and inclusive growth.

By resisting manipulative tactics and uniting against divisive agendas, GRS can continue to serve as a pillar of stability—guiding Sabah toward a brighter, more autonomous future where local resources benefit its people and governance aligns with the aspirations of Sabahans.

Opposition parties are certainly capitalising on the issue to garner political advantage, leveraging public concern to undermine the current government’s stance.

Sabahans should stay vigilant against conspiracy theories and schemes that offer no real benefit to the state or its people.
