Is there an unsettled dispute on the birthdate of Malaysia?
It’s always 1963 to me.
As to the date – Aug 31 or Sept 16, I’ll leave it to another day.
When a man must fight with his wife over the date of their anniversary, it usually reveals unresolved conflicts and lingering suspicion.
Sadly, such a relationship doesn’t last.
Malaysia was born in 1963 when the four partners – Malaya, Singapore, Sabah (then North Borneo) and Sarawak signed the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
This document is lodged with the United Nations.
Never mind Malaya’s history of thinly veiled racial designs for Malaysia and the influence of Sabah and Sarawak in Malaya’s numbers game, the nation’s date of birth is beyond debate.
They say that the victors write the history.
But the victor’s of Malaysia are its entire people.
This however hasn’t stopped the supremacist-inclined few to revise, rewrite and fabricate history to change Malaysia’s birth to 1957.
Is it feng shui? Is there something in the calender? The Georgian, Islamic, Mayan or Lunar one?
To my fellow Sabahans, please remember that we gained independence from the British before we went on to partake in the formation of Malaysia.
That didn’t take place in 1957 or prior.
Malaysia isn’t a product of a senseless orgies and Sabah as a people did everything in order to secure our place in Malaysian history.
So the next time you forward messages and National Day posters, make sure you send those not made by propagandists.
It’s 1963. Got it?
