KUALA LUMPUR :  – The Election Commission (EC) has set Jan 24 as polling day for the by-elections for the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat and the Lamag state seat.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said nomination day and early voting have been scheduled for Jan 10 and Jan 20, respectively.

The by-elections are being held following the death of the incumbent, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, on Dec 5 at a private hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Bung Moktar was Sabah Umno chief and
had served as a Deputy Chief Minister.

According to Ramlan, the electoral roll for the by-elections comprises 48,722 voters, consisting of 48,526 ordinary voters and 196 police personnel who are early voters.

“The allocation to conduct the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections amounts to RM10 million,” he said at a press conference in Putrajaya on Tuesday.

At the 17th Sabah state election, Bung Moktar, 66, defended the Lamag state seat with a majority of 153 votes in a six-cornered contest.

The Lamag state seat was first contested during the 16th Sabah state election in 2020.

Meanwhile, at the 10th general election in November 1999, Bung Moktar won the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat and served as the area’s Member of Parliament for six terms. – scoop.com
