Restoring the Integrity of the MA63

By James Ligunjang JP

Restoring the integrity of the Malaysia Agreemet 1963 (MA63) is paramount for upholding the sanctity of Malaysia as a federation.

The MA63 was a pivotal agreement signed by the Federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore in 1963.

It outlined the terms for the formation of Malaysia, ensuring equal rights, special safeguards, and autonomous powers for Sabah and Sarawak.

Regrettably, this agreement has since suffered from numerous violations and breaches, resulting in feelings of discontent and marginalization among the people of Sabah and Sarawak.

To restore the MA63 to its original position, the principles and commitments enshrined in the agreement must be respected.

This entails recognizing and upholding the autonomy and rights of Sabah and Sarawak, ensuring their equitable representation and active involvement in decision-making processes, and providing them with fair and inclusive economic and developmental opportunities.

Additionally, it is crucial to address the grievances and imbalances that have arisen as a consequence of past violations.

By restoring the MA63, Malaysia can reinforce its federal structure and promote unity and harmony among its diverse populations.

This act would exemplify Malaysia’s commitment to honoring agreements, instilling trust and confidence amongst all states within the federation.

Addressing historical injustices resulting from past violations will further foster a more inclusive and equitable Federation of Malaysia.

It is important to acknowledge that without the MA63, Malaysia would not have come into existence. Therefore, any transgressions against the MA63 will only serve to undermine the country. Restoring and preserving the integrity of this agreement is essential to safeguarding the unity, prosperity, and stability of Malaysia as a whole.
