PUTRAJAYA – The move by yet another opposition lawmaker to back Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership is proof of the unity government’s strength, said government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is also communications minister, said the government welcomed Bersatu MP Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi’s decision, which made him the sixth opposition MP to back Anwar’s government.

“(Dr Zulkafperi’s decision) is evidence that the government today is one which has gained the trust of various parties,” Fahmi said during a press conference at his ministry’s headquarters, here, today.

“As such, claims from certain quarters that the government will fall is evidently (detached from) the reality of the situation.”

He added that the government had not pressured any opposition lawmakers for their support, and the government would continue to implement people-centric policies.

He also referenced assertions made by Dr Zulkafperi’s fellow Bersatu lawmaker, Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, on how there would be “seven or eight” opposition lawmakers switching their support to the government.

“There might be some truth in what Bukit Gantang (Syed Abu Hussin) said, but we’ll see,” Fahmi said.

Earlier, Dr Zulkafperi became the sixth Bersatu MP to back Anwar’s administration, citing the need for political stability while ensuring the nation’s economic recovery.

However, in order to “avoid confusion”, Dr Zulkafperi insisted that he remained a Bersatu member who would not betray the party.

Last November, Syed Abu Hussin became the fifth opposition MP to declare support for Anwar, following Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang) and Zahari Kechik (Jeli). – Scoop
