Final verdict on Peter Anthony’s appeal set for Nov 27

The ex-Sabah minister is seeking to overturn his conviction and three years jail sentence plus RM50,000 fine for falsifying Universiti Malaysia Sabah maintenance and service contracts.

KUALA LUMPUR : – The Court of Appeal has set Nov 27 for its final decision on the bid by former Sabah infrastructure development minister Datuk Peter Anthony to overturn his conviction and sentence for falsifying maintenance and service contract documents at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin and Peter’s lawyer, Nicholas Kow, confirmed the date today.

On Aug 1, the case wrapped up before a three-judge panel comprising Justices Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Zaini Mazlan and Azmi Ariffin.

This marks Peter’s final appeal after the High Court on April 18, 2023, upheld his conviction, three-year prison sentence and RM50,000 fine imposed by the sessions court on May 26, 2022.

The Melalap assemblyman has paid the fine.

Peter, as managing director of Asli Jati Sdn Bhd, was accused of falsifying a letter from the office of the deputy vice-chancellor of UMS dated June 9, 2014, by including false statements with the intent to deceive.

The offence was said to have been committed at the office of the principal private secretary to the prime minister at the Perdana Putra building, Putrajaya, between June 13 and Aug 21, 2014, under Section 468 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment and a fine, upon conviction. – FMT
