Research collaboration on timber species for downstream products development

SANDAKAN:  A seminar on research collaboration between Integrated Wood Processing Sdn Bhd and UPM Universiti Putra Malaysia on selected potential timber species for downstream products development was held in Sept 3 in Tawau.

The event organised by Integrated Wood Processing Sdn. Bhd. focused on wood quality properties and durability of Sabah plantation timber species

It was also participated by various forestry stakeholders, besides the Sabah Forestry Department officials including Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests (Research and Development) Dr Arthur Chung.

The results of the research findings were presented in a half day seminar, were presented by UPM’s Dr Adlin Sabrina Muhammad Roseley and Dr Sabihah Salim, where they shed light on both the mechanical properties and durability for the species in studied, while Professor Dr Paridah Md Tahir shared on the potential of solid biofuel.

Rahman Khan, the CEO of Jawala Plantation Industries Sdn Bhd, was invited to speak in the seminar as well, on the topic of: “The Development of Industrial Tree Plantation in Sabah and its Potential: The Jawala Experience.”

The seminar was wrapped up with a panelist session in which there were discussions on the research findings and the challenges faced by both the upstream and downstream industries.

There were 70 participants and it has been a fruitful experience for all.
