KGKS wants a review of assessment method for regional housing allowances in Sabah

Murkam Haji Hussien …The 25km distance requirement does not accurately represent the actual circumstances.

KOTA KINABALU: The supreme council members of the Sabah Government Teachers’ Union (KGKS) have unanimously agreed to request a delay in the disbursement of housing incentive allowances to all union members who have received eligibility review notifications until the matter is resolved.

KGKS President Murkam Haji Hussien stated that the union feels it is necessary to advocate for its members, as there are concerns that the 25km distance requirement does not accurately represent the actual circumstances.

“The KGKS contends that the 25 km distance is determined based on a straight-line measurement on a map,” he explained.

“This fixed distance fails to consider new road developments, which are particularly significant in Sabah due to its challenging terrain and river systems,” he added.

Murkam made these comments following the KGKS AMT meeting held at the KGKS office in Sinsuran on Sunday.

He mentioned that KGKS will seek clarification from the Ministry of Education on this issue to ensure that affected members receive adequate support.

“Given the rising cost of living and increasing prices of goods, it is essential to adopt a more appropriate and tailored approach that reflects the unique conditions of each state,” he emphasised.

He further urged the ministry to take all relevant factors into account when determining the calculation methods for the Regional Housing Incentive Allowance.

“We cannot generalise that one situation applies to all; a thorough examination is necessary to ensure that the established method is equitable and comprehensive,” he concluded.
