Big Boom Media team scoops multiple accolades in lifestyle; issues and crisis; and opinion writing categories
KUALA LUMPUR : – Scoop, the flagship product of Big Boom Media brought home five awards across three categories at last night’s Malaysia Public Relations Awards (MPRA) 2024.
Journalist Irwan Shafrizan Ismail won gold in the online media lifestyle category for his Bahasa Malaysia piece titled “Guna TikTok promosi bengkel, Ary jadi kebanggaan Kg Orang Asli Pertak” (Using TikTok to promote his workshop, Ary becomes pride of Kg Orang Asli Pertak).

In the same category, journalist Fabian Peter received silver for his article “Mask on, Game on: Malaysians keep Covid-19 at bay at Paris Olympics”.
Additionally, Arjun Mohanakrishnan’s article “What if we die? Serdang Hospital heart patients see angiograms delayed for one year” won silver in the issues and crisis category.
In the same category, Sandakan-based Rebecca Chong took the bronze for her extensive coverage of the Bajau Laut people, a seafaring community in Sabah facing challenges due to their statelessness.
Assistant news editor Julie Jalaluddin meanwhile took silver in the opinion editorial category for her piece “Coldplay in KL: High xyloband return rate shows Malaysia only behind Denmark, Japan in civic-mindedness”.
Organised by the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA), its president Prof Mohd Said Bani CM Din said the introduction of the Media Category at the Malaysia Public Relations Awards (MPRA) 2024 is a landmark moment, timed perfectly with PRCA Malaysia’s 25th anniversary.

“This new category underscores the essential symbiotic relationship between PR practitioners and the media, recognising the integral role both play in shaping narratives, driving meaningful conversations, and influencing public perceptions.
“By celebrating excellence in journalism, storytelling, and impactful communication, this category aims to further strengthen the partnership between these two interconnected pillars of communication,” he said.
On Scoop’s win, Said said the year-old portal made a remarkable impression, taking home multiple awards and firmly establishing itself as a formidable force in the online media landscape.

The award ceremony took place at the Aloft Hotel here and was graced by Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif, who received the leadership award, while Yayasan Chow Co-Founder Datuk Dr Hartini Zainudin was honoured with the community award.
The awards also coincided with the 25th anniversary of the PRCA which was established to elevate the professional standards of communication and public relations. It is also the first time in the awards 16 years that a media category was introduced.
Themed You and AI: Together Towards a New Era of Communication, this year’s awards and PR Summit focuses on evolution of AI in reshaping communication strategies. In total, this year’s MPRA received 184 entries across 35 categories.
Another new category was the Persuasive Pen category for students which recognises the next generation of PR practitioners. Campaign of the Year (Agency) went to BZBee Consult for its work on the Rainforest World Music Festival 2024. The entry was titled “Rythms of Responsibility: RWMF2024 Redefines Sustainable Tourism”.
The same award in the In-House category went to the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) for its entry From Local to Global: SUA Sitok Empowers Sarawak’s Tourism Players, Boosting Local Economies. – scoop.my
