Airport restaurant shut down by KKM Sandakan due to lack of cleanliness

SANDAKAN : – A restaurant at the airport here was ordered by the Ministry of Health (KKM) Sandakan Office to close for 14 days.

The order made under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983 effective Feb 3 was due to outlet’s for breach of food hygiene regulation.

Sandakan KKM personnel inspected the restaurant and ordered the premises to close due to lack of cleanliness after receiving a public complaint.

According to a vendor, this is the first time since the Sandakan Airport terminal building commenced operations four decades ago that a premises operating under its roof was ordered by the authorities to shut down for breach of food hygiene regulation.

The closure order notice issued by KKM Sandakan could be seen posted on the front shutter of the restaurant, attracting much public attention.

Expressing shock, an air traveller said eateries at airports are supposed to maintain high standards of hygiene.

Meanwhile, a local tourism industry player, Alexander Yee, emphasised that maintaining cleanliness is vital to us having a healthy and quality lifestyle.

This is evident as we have recently recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Moreover, as we get ready for VMY 2026, it is also vital so as to give visitors confidence and eagerness to explore our beautiful country. ” Yee said.
