SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Heritage Trial (SHT) called for the teaching of local history in primary schools. The teaching of local history was discontinued in the mid 50’s.

Start small and simple by introducing history clubs in schools so that the students are exposed to local heritage sites and stories by visiting these sites as school’s excursion and co-curriculum activities.

The SHT had been organising a trial project with the Sandakan Library which they hope to organise from time to time to get the young children interested in history especially Sandakan.

A storytelling session was conducted by the chairman of Sandakan Heritage Trail, Lai King Hang at the Sandakan Library for children below 12 together with Lily Aw and Catherin Chua, both senior team members of Sandakan Heritage Trail.

“This is a trial project with the Sandakan Library which they hope to organise from time to time to get the young children interested in history especially Sandakan,” Lai said Sunday.

Lai said this is a great opportunity for them to learn some history at an early age and urge the government to do more to ensure our children learn the history of our own homeland so that they value the spirit of nationhood and togetherness we have today.

“In order to achieve, we strongly urge our State Government to re introduce teaching of local history in primary schools once again which was discontinued in the mid 50’s,” he said.

Quoting Aristotle, Lai said , “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”
